Then we review the nominations. The first year one person did the review; in later years it has been a small team. It is important that selection is non-competitive (i.e. we have no limits on the number of people selected). Our first year we had 45 people nominated, and we recognized 40. The second year we had about 50 people nominated and the last two years we have had over 75 nominations. We have a very broad definition of “teacher” which includes teachers, paraprofessionals, administrators, after-school and youth workers and community-based educators. To qualify, nominees must have been teaching for at least three years to ensure that those selected are truly committed to the profession. We ask nominators to explain what “social justice” means to them and identify specifically how the nominee’s work fits that definition.
